In a war, you don’t send foot soldiers to fight enemy boats.
And in spiritual warfare you need to be clear who you’re fighting, and where.
Many Christians believe that demons and Satan’s angels are the same thing and that you fight them in the same way.
But they’re not and you don’t.
These are the differences:
What they are
Demons are evil spirits under the control of Beelzebub and ultimately, Satan. They don’t have bodies or wings.
Angels were created by God (see Col 1:16) before he created the earth (Job 38:4,7). They are under Satan’s control, in a regimented hierarchy (Eph 6:12).
One of them, Lucifer (Satan) was thrown out of heaven (Isaiah 14:12–15; Ezekiel 28:12–18).
An “innumerable company of angels” (Hebrews 12:22) was thrown out with him.
Some are in chains awaiting judgment (1 Corinthians 6:3; 2 Peter 2:4; Jude 1:6). The remainder are free Matthew 25:41 to battle against God’s saints in the heavenly places.
What are they like
Demons have wills (Matt 12:44), emotions (James 2:19), intellects (Mark 1:24) and self-awareness (Mark 5:9).
Angels are spirits Hebrews 1:14 with bodies, voices and wings. They can be frightening to look at (Matthew 28:3-4) and sometimes appear in human form (Mark 16:5; Hebrews 13:2).
Where they live
Demons live on earth. There is no biblical evidence of them ever being in heaven. They seek bodies to live in (Matthew 12:43-44 )
Even the bodies of pigs are better than nothing (Mark 5:12-13).
Angels dwell in the heavenly places (Job 1:6-7; Eph 6:12) but sometimes come to earth on specific missions.
How we fight them
Demons: Resist them, quote scripture at them, bind them, loose people from their grip, and cast them out … all in the name of Jesus.
Angels: Pray, quote scripture at them, bind them, command them in the name of Jesus, and take part in worship, praise and intercession.
